The Ruffian key

Why we built it

My favorite weekend drives starts with an ignition key. I think about what I want to drive and were I want to go: Maybe for a cruise along the Pacific Coast Highway for some fresh air and early morning sun, or down to the local Cars and Coffee for a little socializing with like minded individuals.

Not only is the key a promise of that drive - it is a representation of the car. It needs to be special if it belongs to a Ruffian. It needs to have been labored over, built with passion, thought and care. And, just like our cars, it should blend vintage and modern into something new, bold and exciting.

Construction

We worked with Formawerx to design and build the bespoke ignition keys for all Ruffian vehicles. Each key is serialized to each car according to chassis number. Materials are stainless, titanium, Ultem 1000 and color keyed paracord.

Inspiration

The hole in the middle was inspired by Speed Holes; one of the most classic hot rodding details of all time. Its stainless perimeter doubles as an anchor for the paracord which can be seen through translucent, amber colored Ultem (a space age polymer used by NASA). Holding the whole thing together are two exposed screws on the back, a nod to vintage racing. We absolutely love the visible functionality combined with overlapping shapes and materials.
